Protecting Children’s Vision in the Digital Age
Children’s vision is under increasing threat due to daily, prolonged screen exposure. From smartphones and televisions to digital classrooms, young eyes are constantly bombarded with blue light. This exposure, combined with studying in dimly lit environments—especially common in underserved communities—leads to eye strain, headaches, sleep disorders, and poor concentration. Left unaddressed, these problems can result in long-term, irreversible damage.
A post-pandemic vision health survey across BMC schools in South Mumbai revealed alarming results: many children reported itching, redness, poor sleep, and difficulty focusing. Experts confirmed these issues were often linked to blue light exposure and inadequate lighting.
Recognizing this silent crisis, the Deepjyot Foundation consulted ophthalmologists before launching its initiative. Their guidance highlighted a simple yet effective solution—providing blue-light-blocking spectacles even to children without refractive errors. By addressing the problem early, we can protect children’s eyesight, improve concentration, and safeguard their overall well-being for the future.

About Deepjyot Foundation
Deepjyot Foundation was established in 2024 with the guiding motto: “Your Better Vision is Our Mission.” We are a nonprofit organisation registered under Section 8, committed to promoting healthy vision for children from underserved communities. We believe in a proactive, preventive approach, inspired by our core belief: “Prevention is better than a cure”.
After the harmful impact of the lockdown and pandemic, children started spending more time in front of the screen, and due to various causes, their eyesight and vision were poorly impacted. Deepjyot Foundation took the initiative to take care of these underprivileged children. Through our school and community-based initiatives, we organise Eye Power Check camps where children undergo vision testing by trained professionals. After testing, we provide spectacles to all children who with vision correction and those who do not. For children without vision power but showing signs of digital eye strain, we offer specially designed UV and blue-light-blocking spectacles. Children with power receive spectacles suited to their prescription, along with a protective coating.
REGULAR GLASSES vs. BLUE LIGHT PROTECTION GLASSES
Regular glasses correct eyesight but don’t protect from screen-related blue light, which can strain young eyes.
At Deepjyot Foundation, we not only provide blue light protection glasses and regular eye check-ups, but also create awareness among children and families about healthy screen use and eye care. This ensures every child can learn and grow with healthier vision.

What Makes Deepjyot Foundation Unique
Deepjyot Foundation goes beyond basic eye check-ups. We combine screenings, awareness, customised eyewear, and preventive care into one holistic program. Children not only receive free, blue light–blocking glasses (with or without power) but also get to choose their own frames, building confidence and ensuring regular use.
Unlike many programs that stop at diagnosis, we ensure delivery within 3 days, conduct live awareness sessions, and provide preventive eyewear even before vision problems develop. Regular follow-ups further strengthen our impact, making Deepjyot a unique model in child eye health and digital eye care.

When I was ten years old, I had an eye injury that caused me to lose half of my vision in one eye. This incident left me traumatized, and I struggled with the lack of proper care and guidance during my childhood. The impact of that experience still affects me today.
After all these years, I’ve turned my experience into something positive by starting an initiative to provide proper eye care to underprivileged children. Through the Deepjyot Foundation, we aim to give these children guidance and care by ensuring that no child has to go through what I did.
